It is a tradition of the festival that the ceremonial opening belongs to the Janáček Opera ensemble of the National Theatre Brno and their new production of a work by Leoš Janáček. The rapid development in music and art in the first years of the 20th century is the main focus of this year's festival. The opera Osud (Destiny) represents one such ground-breaking work on Janáček’s journey toward a unique musical vocabulary. Osud will have the honour to open the festival this year; the event will be even more significant as one of the best opera directors, Robert Carsen, returns to the Brno theatre on this occasion. The Brno audience had the opportunity to see his production of The Makropulos Affair, performed by the Nuremberg Opera Ensemble, at the Janáček Brno 2012 festival, and the 2016 edition of the festival was opened by the Brno ensemble with his production of Káťa Kabanová which was originally conceived for the Flemish Opera. Now Robert Carsen has been staging his sixth Janáček’s opera directly for Brno and its opera ensemble as a continuation of his extraordinary Janáček cycle that began many years ago with the production of Jenůfa for the Flemish Opera.
