Martin McDonagh

A Very Very Very Dark Matter

Theatre Reduta / Drama Dates and tickets

In this apposite and very cruel comedy, fables are being told about popular figures of the 19th century, but historical facts are not lacking either. Thanks to the spectacular stage setting and excellent performances this play will be savoured by the fans of McDonagh’s films and relished by theatre lovers.

Spectacular fireworks in Copenhagen:  Hans Christian Andersen is being honoured for his work. During his speech of thanks, accompanied by authorial reading, Andersen gets confused about certain details of his fairy tale. More than one question suggests itself: Is he the real author of the story? What secret is hidden in the wooden box in his attic workroom? And what if Andersen met Charles Dickens, who closely guards quite a similar “skeleton in the closet” at his manor?

Following the triumph of his drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, which won the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay in 2018, Martin McDonagh (born in 1970) now comes up with a pitch-black comedy on an intriguing “all but Irish” theme. The story line of the play – the atrocities committed by Belgian colonists in Congo – is an original opportunity to evoke today’s Europe and cultural influences across continents. Has Europe always benefited only from its own resources?  The hot novelty of the season was premiered by London’s Bridge Theatre in October 2018.

Czech premiere: 17th April 2020 at the Reduta Theatre
