For the first time at the Janáček Theatre, Václava Krejčí Housková plays the role of the temperamental gypsy in three performances of Georges Bizet's Carmen. She is one of the most charismatic mezzo-sopranos of the younger generation of Czech singers and her debut in this role in Prague three years ago met with an extraordinary ovation. She has only been a member of our ensemble for two seasons, but she has already gripped audiences with her Káča in Antonín Dvořák's fairy-tale opera, and in May we will see and hear her at the Mahen Theatre in an upcoming production of Rossini's Le Comte Ory, where she performs the breeches role of the squire Isolier. The Brno production of Carmen, directed by Tomáš Pilař, brings an alternative vision of the well-known characters and their passions as well as disappointments, captivating audiences with the atmosphere of Spain's Andalusia and the smell of tobacco leaves. Alongside exceptional performances by the orchestra and chorus, we can also look forward to the Italian tenor Luciano Mastro in the role of Don José and the guest singer Svatopluk Sem as Escamillo. We will be showing this extremely popular opera only three times this season: 9, 11 and 14 March 2017.
