On 18 December 1926 the City Theatre in Brno hosted the premiere of Janáček’s eighth opera, based on a play by Karel Čapek – The Makropulos Affair 90 years almost to the day since that premiere – on 19 and 20 December, the Janáček Opera will present this unique opera with the Swedish soprano Annalena Persson in the title role of Emilia Marty. We invite you to this fantastical comedy with its mysterious plot which at times resembles a detective story, expertly directed by David Radok. In February the Janáček Opera will represent Brno and the Czech Republic with this production at one of the leading Asian festivals, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, alongside illustrious ensembles like the San Francisco Opera and the Bavarian State Ballet. A television recording of the production was awarded the Czech Crystal prize at the Golden Prague international festival as well as the VIZE 97 prize.
