Two great opera divas of the 20th century in the famous aria Suicidio! from the opera La Gioconda by Amilcare Ponchielli. Enjoy the singing of Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi!
“We find ourselves in a dream about Venice. It is the Venice of the late Renaissance, a time of decay and decadence, a time when Emperor Rudolph reigned in Prague and Europe was saturated with the heavy scent of Renaissance ornamentation. Winter is coming to an end, carnival time is approaching and on the streets the past merges with the future, reality with dream, heaven with earth… Instead of ballet there will be acrobats, and we trust that together with the grand choral scenes this will live up to the genre of Grande Opera.” (Tomáš Pilař, director)
Are you a fan of Verdi’s Aida or Puccini’s Tosca? If so, then the February opera premiere of La Gioconda is just for you, with its stirring romantic drama based on Victor Hugo’s play Angelo, Ttyrant of Padua, which immediately received 20 curtain calls at its premiere at La Scala in Milan in 1876! It was then performed to great acclaim only seven years later in 1883 by the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Maria Callas made her debut in Italy singing the part of Giocanda. All of this plus the Dance of the Hours, one of the most frequently performed ballet numbers of all time, which was also used by Walt Disney in the now cult film Fantasia. Yes, she dies at the end as always, but that is part of the genre. But as always, it will be done in great style! Alternating in the title role are Iveta Jiříková and Csilla Boross, recipient of the Green Room Award 2014, the DIVA Award and the Thália Award.
