On Sunday 9 October, conductor Marko Ivanović and stage director Jiří Heřman scooped the Theatre News Award for the National Theatre Brno’s Janáček Opera company in the Music Theatre category for the production The Epic of Gilgamesh / Dido and Aeneas. The decision was taken by a jury of twenty-one experts. Prizes are awarded in seven categories for creative achievements in theatre over the past season. This year’s other prizewinners included Ivan Trojan, Kamila Polívková, Cécile Da Costa and Zdeněk Merta.
As well as Marko Ivanović and director Jiří Heřman, those who contributed to the staging of the Epic of Gilgamesh / Dido and Aeneas include the conductor Václav Luks (Dido and Aeneas). The full production team can be found on the Janáček Opera website. This year, theatregoers will have only three opportunities to see this excellent production, on 15, 16 and 18 November 2016 at the Janáček Theatre.
This year the National Theatre Brno boasts three nominations for the Theatre News Award. Besides Marko Ivanović, Václav Luks and Jiří Heřman, the others nominated were: Jiří Kylián, Mário Radačovský and Lukáš Timulák for the choreography of the production Petite Mort in the category Dance and Movement Theatre, and Hana Tomáš Briešťanská for the role of Štěpka in the production Oil Lamps. This makes the National Theatre Brno the most successful theatre in the Czech Republic in terms of the number of nominations for this prestigious prize.
