About company

The Ballet of the National Theatre Brno is the second largest professional ballet company in the Czech Republic, with a century-long history and a rich tradition, including the world premiere of Sergei Prokofiev’s famous ballet Romeo and Juliet in 1938 at the Mahen Theatre. Thanks to the high level of professionalism and quality of the company, the Ballet of the National Theatre Brno offers the audience classical ballet repertoire, neoclassical choreographies and contemporary dance styles. With the arrival of the new management of the theatre in 2013, headed by director Martin Glaser, the approach of the founder to the National Theatre Brno changed fundamentally and the ballet company could start performing, alongside the classical repertoire, the truly outstanding world works of the most prominent contemporary choreographers. Thanks to the artistic director of the ballet, Mario Radačovský, one of the most prominent personalities of Slovak ballet, and thanks to his personal contacts and connections to the European ballet world, the Brno Ballet has been experiencing a time of creative growth for ten years.

In addition to ballet classics, the repertoire also includes for the first time the names of significant choreographers – George Balanchine, Jiří Kylián, Nacho Duato, as well as creators of the younger generation such as Johan Inger and Edward Clug. International ballet stars have been invited to guest perform at the Ballet of the National Theatre Brno and become part of performances and gala concerts. Over the last decade, the Ballet of the National Theatre Brno has performed internationally in guest appearances in Finland, Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Estonia, Hungary, Austria and China. It has also been the basis for projects of international significance, such as the European Dance Competition Brno or Ballet NdB 2, a junior ballet company. The tradition of dance festivals has been renewed in the Czech Republic with the Dance Brno project, which connects the Czech professional dance scene.
