About company
Janacek Opera of the National Theatre Brno belongs among the leading opera houses in Central Europe, with its tradition dating back to the 19th century. During its existence, the opera ensemble has introduced numerous significant productions, including world or Czechoslovak premieres (among others, L. Janáček, A. Berg, B. Martinů, D. Shostakovich). Janacek Opera also cooperates with distinguished theatres abroad (Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Göteborg Operan, Théâtre de Caen, Royal Opéra – Château de Versailles Spectacles, Welsh National Opera, Teatro Real Madrid, Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin) (2024), directors and conductors (David Pountney, Robert Carsen, David Radok, Tomáš Hanus, Jakub Hrůša etc.) as well as outstanding artists. A wide repertoire of the 18th and 19th opera literature is offered to the audience as well as the production of the 20th and 21st century. Being not confined by the Czech Republic boundaries, the opera ensemble spans its activities across Europe and Middle East (Royal Opera House Muscat, Dubai), Hong Kong Arts Festival and Shanghai China International Arts Festival. Janáček Opera organizes the Janáček Brno International Festival, which has twice won at the prestigious International Opera Awards in the Festival category, specifically for its 2018 and 2024 editions. Leoš Janáček’s opera The Excursions of Mr. Brouček, the production that opened the award-winning 2024 festival, triumphed in the New Production category, further establishing Brno’s position among global leaders in operatic excellence.
