Nacho Duato

Bdění

Janáček Theatre / Ballet Dates and tickets

The ballet evening presents the work of leading contemporary choreographers Jiří Kylián and Nacho Duato. The title Bdění takes the NdB Ballet to a higher European level once again and promises the audience a breathtaking experience of the movement genius of the creators and the extraordinary interpretation of our dancers.

The title Bdění hides ballets by world-class creators. Jiří Kylián is one of our most acclaimed and respected artists of Czech origin, awarded with many international prizes. In his choreography Sleepless, he deals with the sleepless nights of creators but also with the creation of a work of art – to what extent the artist is absorbed in creation within the conscious and subconscious, waking and sleeping. Kylián’s remarkable interplay of scenography and choreography opens up further possibilities for the search for new dimensions, not only in terms of movement. The scene in the ballet Sleepless is inspired by the work of Lucio Fontana, an Argentine artist who used cuts in his paintings to create a new dimension in the world of two-dimensional painting. The scene is dominated by a plastic screen with vertical cuts from which dancers emerge in irreal positions, creating a new dimension, an illusion as if torn from the mind of the choreographer in the process of creation.

In the Bdění ballet we will also offer two choreographies by Nacho Duato, who worked alongside Hans van Manen and Jiří Kylián as a permanent choreographer at Nederlands Dans Theater and is currently the artistic director of the Mikhailovsky Ballet in St. Petersburg. Audiences had the opportunity to see the title Gnawa years ago as part of the 4 Elements evening at the Mahen Theatre. We decided to bring this lively piece inspired by Moroccan folklore back to our repertoire.

The third part of the evening is Nacho Duato’s fascinating choreography White Darkness. In it, Duato intensely reflects on the theme of drug addiction, a situation he himself experienced first-hand in the form of the untimely death of his sister, to whom he dedicated the work. The heroine of the ballet, who has lost faith in love, seeks oblivion. The path she has chosen, however, brings her not joy but feverish excitement, followed by disappointment, alienation and voluntary isolation.
