A non-traditional rendering of the well-known lyrical and humorous story about an untamable, cunning vixen, based on the movement theatre and the voice of Karel Höger, who narrated the original story by Rudolf Těsnohlídek. Let us be transported back to the recording studio of the 1960s, in which, thanks to the authentic narration, unexpected scenes of the vixen’s comical and serious adventures take place. During the radio broadcasting and movement narration, the cunning little vixen slowly rises above the everyday necessities of her own survival, compares the world of men with that of animals, and looks for the real understanding of the life circle, in which everyone “becomes silly with love” once in his or her life.

The story of Giselle was inspired by a Slavic legend about single girls who die just before their weddings. Those girls turn into fairies after their death and appear to lonely passers-by as they dance to death. Giselle, a village girl who is in love with a nobleman Albert, meets the same destiny as she passes away just before her wedding and turns into a fairy. Does the same fate await Albert as the other passers-by go around in circles in the forest? Or does Giselle save him from a certain death? It was none otherless than Adolphe Charles Adam who composed music to this popular romantic ballet. Michal Štípa, choreographer and stage director of this performance, studied the piece with his dance ensemble according to the classic version of Jean Coralli, Jules Perrot and Marius Petipa, that is as it is danced all around the world.

Ballet of the National Theatre Brno

Lady of the Camellias
23rd of October at the Janáček Theatre

Choreography, dramaturgy and direction: Valentina Turcu

Music: Franz Schubert

Musical adaptation: Andrei Pushkarev

Conductor and musical staging: Robert Kružík

Set Design: Marko Japelj

Costume Design: Alan Hranitelj

Light design: Aleksandar Čavlek

Vice, love, sacrifice…

Ballet NdB invited the prominent Croatian choreographer Valentina Turcu to create the original ballet. Turcu’s masterfully crafted choreography to several reworked Schubert’s scores provides a unique experience of a truly heart-rendering ballet spectacle that is imbued with many contrasting themes, with many of them still considered as morally dubious, such as the question of free love, especially through a woman’s perspective. A unique and thought-provoking viewpoint of a female choreographer provides us not only with a new “reading” of the novel, but rather gives us a more authentic, believable, yet seductive and rather intense »original« – a multi-layered drama ballet that features strong and energized, as well as highly aestheticized movement, which is accentuated by a personal signature and remarkable expressivity of ballet dancers from Brno. Turcu’s brilliant, yet delicate choreographic manuscript The Lady of the Camellias – along with the unsurpassed Schubertian melody, full of beauty, longing and anguish – will undoubtedly render you speechless, but will still leave you questioning about true nature of love, its enigmatic beauty, as well of devastating impact it often has on our lives.
