La Bayadére

Janáček Theatre / Ballet Dates and tickets

Exotic story from the treasures of classical ballet.

Although the classical ballet La Bayadère premiered in the choreography of the well‑known Marius Petipa at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg in 1877, it is often performed on leading world stages to this day thanks to its oriental fairy‑tale subject and brilliant dance technique. The story takes place in old India. The love between the temple dancer Nikiya (the bayadère) and the military commander Solor angers powerful enemies – The High Brahmin, The Rajah and his daughter Gamzatti, Solor’s fiancée. Nikiya dies in the middle of a religious celebration after being bitten by a viper, hidden in a donated flower basket. Only in the world of dreams does Solor meet the shadow of his beloved Nikiya. And so the ballet is the story of an unfulfilled love with a tragic end, where the ethereal beings of an unreal world confront the real world. It is remarkable that despite its undisputed choreographic, dramaturgical and musical quality, La Bayadére has waited 126 long years for its Czech premiere – at our theatre. The renewed premiere is presented in the new stage design by Slovak artist Marek Hollý.

Renewed premiere: 18th of October 2019 at Janáček Theatre
