Amphitryon

Theatre Reduta / Drama Dates and tickets

A comedy about couples’ relationships which reveals the essence of jealousy, infidelity and the desire to seduce and be seduced. The staging of this story, which is more racy than obscene, is a whirlwind of brilliant acting and music.

In times when gods were still roaming the Earth and the heavenly ruler Jupiter indulged in philandering at the highest levels, humans felt completely insecure when crossing the threshold of their homes, even if it were just for a fleeting moment. Amphitryon had had his fill of enduring this ungodly aspect of Jupiter – as the god had transformed himself into Amphitryon in order to seduce his wife. Mercury takes on the form of Amphitryon’s servant Sosie and questions begin to accumulate: Who is really who? Who is with whom? Who is not? And who exactly am I, when I see myself standing there? Amphitryon is one of the best dramas by the French playwright Molière (1622–1673). Along with Misanthrope and Don Juan it counts among the plays that had been exciting both theatricals and spectators for centuries. Director Aminata Keita opted for the outstandingly witty translation in verse, by Vladimír Mikeš, of this comedy.
