The Patriarch
It’s Never Too Late to Say Sorry
Heimo is a fit sixty-something, recently retired, who had planned to spend his retirement with his wife in a villa in France. But after a few weeks, a longing begins to grow in Heimo: perhaps there is still something he could do for his country, perhaps his moment will come again—after all, there are so many crises and challenges all over the world! And so he returns once more to his native Finland to get involved in the development of nuclear energy. But the world has changed imperceptibly under Heim’s watch, and suddenly it seems (hard to believe) that he himself is different than before—and influences he doesn’t understand are entering his family: ecology, feminism, therapy. Heim’s family doesn’t understand that his final great mission is about to begin right now. Or is the family itself the mission? This family drama, focusing on a generation of men who refuse to step out of the limelight even at the cost of straining relationships with their loved ones, was written by Finnish author Juha Jokela (*1970) for the Finnish National Theatre. The NdB Drama Company presents the play in its Czech premiere.
