Jan Šťáva

Bass, Jan Šťáva, studied voice since childhood with his mother, the singing teacher and opera singer Zdeňka Rybecká. In 1999 he was accepted into the Pavel Křížkovský High School Specialising in Arts in Brno where he was in the class of Mgr. Irena Vašíčková-Pollini. During his studies he won several singing competitions including the Prague Singer and the Dušek Competition. In 2006 he recorded his first CD – Biblical Songs of Antonín Dvořák and Afro-American Spirituals. In 2007 he was accepted into the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU) in Brno and studied under the instruction of MgA. Zdeňek Šmukař. He has been a guest artist with the JAMU Chamber Opera since 2003. In 2007 he participated in master classes led by Argentinean tenor José Cura in Nancy, France, where he won the Grand Prix and was also given the opportunity to work with the Opera National de Lorraine in Nancy. There he performed in Mozart’s Idomeneo in 2009 and in Puccini’s La Rondine in 2012.

He has guested with the Moravian Theatre Olomouc, National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava and in May 2011 he had his debut at the National Theatre in Prague as Osmin in Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail. He has also worked with the Ensemble Opera Diversa and is a founding member of the Wopera-sérija association. Since 2010 he has been a soloist of the Janáček Opera where he has portrayed the roles of Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), Don Andrès (La Périchole), A Mandarin (Turandot) and Alidoro (La Cenerentola).
