Jiří Sulženko
Bass, Jiří Sulženko, is one of the leading interpreters of opera and concert music in the Czech Republic. His professional music career began in the 1980s as a double bass player in the Orchestra of the National Theatre in Prague. There he was employed as a member of the Opera in 1990 after short engagements in Olomouc and Brno. He became a soloist in 2008 with the Opera of the Saarlandisches Staatstheater in Saarbrücken. In the 2009/2010 season he made his debut at La Scala in Milan in Janáček’s From the House of the Dead.
His most outstanding roles include Leporello (Don Giovanni), Kecal (The Bartered Bride), Vodník (Rusalka), Zaccaria (Nabucco), Scarpia (Tosca) and Bartolo (The Barber of Seville). He has performed a number of roles with other European companies in Sweden, France, Spain, The Netherlands, Austria and Germany, as well as in Japan.
Equally important are his concert activities across Europe, the USA, Japan, Brazil and Australia. He has had great success at prestigious festivals including the Prague Spring, Brucknerfest in Linz, Ravenna Festival, Edinburgh Festival, and Le Mans. After finishing his engagement in Saarbrücken, he again became a member of the Opera of the National Theatre of Prague from the 2012/2013 season and also from the 2013/2014 season, a member of the Opera of the National Theatre Brno.
