Robert Kružík

Cellist and conductor Robert Kružík was born in Brno in 1990. From the age of six he attended private cello lessons with Bedřich Havlík. He continued his studies at the Brno Conservatory, where in addition to playing the cello under the direction of Miroslav Zicha, he also enrolled in the field of conducting. He developed his previous conducting experience, acquired privately with Evžen Holiš, at the conservatory in the class of Stanislav Kummer. As one of the best graduates, he continued his conservatory studies by participating in many master classes (with J. Podhoranský, J. Bárta, M. Fukačová and R. Wallfisch) and as a student at HAMU in Prague. There he again studies both disciplines: conducting (currently with Charles Olivieri – Munro, Leoš Svárovský and Lubomír Mátl) and playing the cello with Miroslav Petráš. In the academic year 2012/2013, he attended the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste in Switzerland. Robert Kružík has demonstrated his talent in many cello competitions, e.g. at the Concertino Praga, at the Dotzauer in Dresden, at the Leoš Janáček International Competition and at the Prague Spring International Music Competition. In 2012, he won the first prize and a special prize for the interpretation of the work of Bohuslav Martinů in the competition of the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation. He was a member of the Moravian Chamber Orchestra for five years, in 2008 he debuted as a soloist with the Brno Philharmonic and the Bohuslav Martinů Zlín Philharmonic. He has been a part of the Matys String Quartet since 2006. Since the 2013/2014 season, he has been included in the Youth List of the Czech Music Fund Foundation.

With the same verve which he devotes himself to the cello, Robert Kružík also conducts. While still studying at the conservatory in Brno, he developed his conducting skills as the chief conductor of the Chamber Orchestra of the City of Blansko and the Helfert Orchestral Association in Brno. Upon his arrival at the AMU in Prague, he received an offer to become the chief conductor of the Cologne Philharmonic, where he has been working for the fourth season. As part of the Summer Conducting Courses in Teplice in 2011, he performed the opera Così fan tutte in the Karlovy Vary Theater together with the North Bohemian Philharmonic in Teplice. In September 2012, he opened the Mladá Praha festival with the Pavel Haas Chamber Orchestra, in the same year he collaborated with the Prague Chamber Philharmonic and last year made his debut with the Brno Philharmonic. In the 2013/2014 season, among others, he collaborated with the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra of Ostrava, Ensemble Opera Diversa. He regularly cooperates with many Czech orchestras, for example: PKF – Prague Philharmonia, Brno Philharmonic, Prague Chamber Orchestra and South Bohemian Chamber Philharmonic. He worked with the Janáček Opera National Theater as an assistant conductor on the productions of the operas Maria di Rohan, Vec Makropulos, Hry o Marii and Tosca and as second conductor on the production of the opera Hubička. Since January 2016, he has been the conductor of the Janáček Opera NdB.
