Karol Szymanowski

King Roger

/ Opera Dates and tickets

Two conceptions of the world, one border between them – one embodies reason and light, the other is elemental, dark and irrational. One night, a charismatic shepherd arrives at the Christian court of King Roger and disrupts the established order of its Christian values and view of the world. Do his teachings bring joy and goodness or merely destruction and chaos?

The opera King Roger by the Polish composer Karol Szymanowski does not offer a clear answer. He himself described it as a mystery, the theme of which is the self-knowledge of man, his sexuality and spirituality.

The composer found inspiration for this work, which has its premiere in 1924, during a trip he took to the island of Sicily, a place abounding in monuments of ancient and oriental culture and early Christian art. This is perhaps why the historical figure of King Roger II, who ruled here in the twelfth century and at whose court Christian and Arabic culture and philosophy intermingled, became the focal point of Szymanowski’s opera. In the same way, thanks to the composer’s fascination with antiquity and the exoticism of the Orient, elements of not just Impressionism, but also Arabic music are reflected in his work.

This unique work is to be presented for the first time on the opera stage in Brno, where it is also to be the debut for the talented young director Vladimír John, who recently graduated from the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts (JAMU) and who captivated the public from Brno and beyond with his graduation performance last year.

Synopsis of the opera

Act 1

Evening service begins in the presence of King Roger. The Archbishop and the people ask the king to take action against the mysterious Shepherd who is preaching faith in another god. The King’s wife Roxana and his advisor Edrisi advise him to hear out the Shepherd. The Shepherd arrives and tells of his god and the love and beauty he offers. The Archbishop, along with the Deaconess and the people, accuse the Shepherd of blasphemy, and Roger sentences the Shepherd to death. He then reverses his decision at the request of Roxana and Edrisi and orders the Shepherd to be released. As the Shepherd is leaving, Roger stops him and orders him to come to the palace that night and face his judgement.

Act 2

Roger, accompanied by Edrisi, awaits the Shepherd’s arrival anxiously. Roxana’s voice is heard in the distance begging in song for mercy for the Shepherd. The Shepherd interrupts her song with his arrival and speaks again about his world of freedom and love. The Shepherd’s presence attracts the people and Roxana, and in their dance they gradually succumb to his spell. Roger tries to stop him, but in vain. The Shepherd invites them all to follow him to his country. He also invites Roger – if he wants to pass judgement on him, he must come after him. The people and Roxana follow the Shepherd, and Roger is left alone with Edrisi. Finally, however, he decides to set out on a pilgrimage and follow the crowd.

Act 3

A pilgrimage can also be a journey into one’s own soul. Roger sets out on it with Edrisi. Will he find answers to his questions at the end of it? Are Roxana and the Shepherd merely voices inside him? Dawn breaks and with it comes insight…
