Antigone in New York

Rather be homeless than graveless

All the three have seen their dreams fulfilled! They have made it to America! Yet today, they live on a bench in one of the most dangerous parts of New York. In their expatriated ‘Central Europe’, Sasha, a Russian Jew, and Flea, a Polish Catholic, treat a Puerto Rican woman called Anita. Although hunger and freeze made them lose many ideals and moral principles, when it comes to a dignified burial of their fellowman they will themselves to act. In the manner of Antigone, the mythical hero, who – thousands years ago – had buried her brother in the gates of Thebes against the king’s will. In our story, there are no ancient rules but three homeless people and one policeman. There is also a lot of black humour, which had no place in the kothornoi boots of high tragedy. The most famous play by Janusz Głowacki (1938–2017), “Poland’s McDonagh”, brilliantly translated by Janusz Klimsza, will be put on stage by this ‘old stager’ of actors’ theatre. The cast comprising NTB Drama Company’s leading actors promises a virtuosic concert of acting.

Premiere: May 21st, 2025 at Reduta Theatre
