One day in the life of Mark and Nina

Nina and Mark, a long-married couple, are having breakfast. Nina is a member of parliament; Mark is a high school teacher. Nina, who is trying to secure funding for a women’s shelter, has to deal with lobbyists, while Mark is settling into a new job and grappling with the daily dramas of teenagers and their parents. At breakfast, they promise to each other to watch a movie in the evening. But before the evening and the long-awaited movie arrives, we get to see their day: seemingly ordinary, but full of so many encounters, clashes, tense situations, and failures that by the end of it, the characters are exhausted, transformed, perhaps different from those people who said goodbye to each other in the morning.

In the latest play by German writer Maja Zade, which the NdB Drama Theatre is presenting in its Czech premiere, Tomáš David and Petra Lorenc play the parts of not only Mark and Nina, the married couple, but also those of all the twenty-one other characters that appear in the drama. Changeability gave the play its name, and the actors’ versatility makes the single day in the life of Mark and Nina a captivating spectacle. Maja Zade is a German dramaturge and playwright who, in recent years, has been associated with the successful era of Berlin’s Schaubühne am Lehninerplatz Theatre, where the production changes premiered at the end of 2024.
