The Wild Duck
Do you have the right to do that?
One of the most important playwrights of modern European theatre deals with the theme of illusion and truth in The Wild Duck, a play from 1884. At the centre of the story is the Ekdal family, whose life is interwoven with secrets, lies, and self-deception. The young idealist Gregers Werle decides to uncover the family’s hidden past and, in his unbridled pride, believes that he will bring purification and freedom to everyone. However, his efforts to reveal the truth trigger a series of events that profoundly affect the fates of all involved. The Wild Duck is a timeless drama that also explores the fragility of human relationships. Ibsen asks whether it is possible to live in truth without losing the ability to dream.
Director Jan Frič is one of the most prominent artists of his generation. Between 2017 and 2022, he shaped the face of the Prague National Theatre’s Drama Company as its in-house director. The production is a co-production with Brno’s Aldente Theatre, where, under the direction of Jitka Vrbková, young actors and authors with Down syndrome meet professional theatre artists without disabilities.
