Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Don Giovanni
Is the love of one woman not enough? And is it even love that Giovanni seeks on his journey from one to another, leaving dozens of broken-hearted lovers behind? What if he is only looking for the thrill of the hunt and rebellion against the social order?
The character of Don Juan – Don Giovanni – has permeated the history of literature and theater for centuries. The first to bring him to the stage as a seducer of women and a denier of human and divine laws was the Spanish playwright Tirso de Molina. Since then, every era has interpreted Don Juan in its own way. Of all Mozart’s operas, Don Giovanni generates the greatest discussion and continuous search for directorial interpretations. The perspective has shifted over the centuries from a Baroque dramma giocoso to a Romantic view of Giovanni as a hero and a libertine.
What is Giovanni like today? Director Petr Forman will seek the answer to this question in the fascinating world of illustrations by the internationally acclaimed artist Petr Sís. This production of Don Giovanni will be another in a series where Collegium 1704 takes its place in the orchestra pit of the Janáček Theatre, letting Mozart’s music sound in a historically informed performance.
Starring Roman Hoza and Luigi di Donato (Don Giovanni), Veronika Rovná (Donna Anna), and Jan Šťáva (Leporello).
