Hotel Strindberg

Mahen Theatre / Drama 16/05/2025 19:00

One hotel, seven couples and the ceaseless rivalry between men and women. Are you satisfied in your couple? After having spent a night at Hotel Strindberg, nothing will be as before! In one of the hotel rooms, a husband, burning with jealously, is led to believe that his daughter may not be his at all.  Another guest has never come to terms with the fact that the love of his life married someone else – when running into her and her husband at the hotel, he begins to plot revenge. A happily married woman is persuaded to have glimpsed the man whom she had taken for her fated love… and all of a sudden she feels that her marriage may not have been as happy as it seems. In the adjacent room, a young girl has just got a positive pregnancy test result. She spends the evening calling her boyfriend, but gets the answering machine only. Another man strives to make his wife withdraw her application for divorce. But what if just a while ago she saw a strange woman leaving her husband’s room? A newly married young couple see their honeymoon spoiled by someone spreading rumors that the bridegroom stares at other women at the hotel. Just a while ago, the receptionist checked in a man in his best years who is about to present his new fiancée to his adult children. Nonetheless, a little problem may lie behind the fact that his bride-to-be, who is forty years younger than him, knows suspiciously well his son…  This night at Hotel Strindberg is going to be long! The classic of the Swedish literature, August Strindberg, is a dramatist of conjugal and lover misunderstandings revealing cruel struggles between the two sexes. His work had an enormous influence on many celebrated authors, such as Ingmar Bergman. Now, the Australian playwright Simon Stone (*1984) comes up with a modern adaptation of Strindberg’s most important stage plays, merging them into a single piece. Stone proves that Strindberg’s work can tell us a lot about male-female relationships in the twenty-first century, presenting their often harsh stories sensitively and with an almost unexpected sense of humour.
