Lidovky Goes to Crap
Čapek, Bass, Poláček, Mahen, Peroutka, Vaculík… just a brief list of personalities inextricably linked to Lidové noviny, a daily paper commonly referred to as Lidovky. Kalenská, Levínský, Lagronová, Baldýnský, Vůjtek, Stančík… just a brief list of contemporary Czech writers who, at the invitation of the NdB Drama Department, contributed to a theatrical collage exploring a phenomenon of journalism that survived both the Protectorate and the Bolsheviks but succumbed to last year’s events. Director Radovan Lipus, co-author of similarly conceived theatrical blockbusters Průběžná O(s)trava krve (The Continuous Blood Poisoning in Ostrava) and Těšínské nebe (The Těšín Sky), uses the newspaper, founded in Brno more than 130 years ago, as springboard for an original production about the demise of the printed world, the disappearance of a certain part of culture, and the interruption of traditions. The authors based this genre-bending mix of sketches, songs, and other “sections” on historical and apocryphal characters and events: we will visit the first Brno editorial headquarters as well as the Avion café, which was home to Prague editor-in-chief’s branch office, and experience Lidovky as a “collaborationist,” a “samizdat,” and maybe even as a “heavenly” paper. For on the stage of the Reduta Theater, Lidové noviny will not yet be a thing of the past.
World premiere: November 14, 2025, at the Reduta Theater
