A comedy about us, and with us: The Líšeň Peace Festival. A massive event held in what is now the Marian Valley – then known as the Gottwald Valley – until the fall of the communist regime. Wouldn’t it be worth reviving? Of course, without the ideological baggage of the past, purely in the interest of peace and well-being. A group of petitioners is determined to obtain enough signatures and set about reviving the faded festival they know from their childhood. The last signature remains to be added when, suddenly, the ground opens up near the Mucha cottage – and through a hole, shaped like a theatre trapdoor, a fossil in the irregular shape of a prompter’s box is hurled into the light of day. Thus does Mother Earth address the chosen nation of theatre artists. What she “whispers” to them will be revealed by a fan of TV crime dramas, a passionate crossword solver, an enthusiastic handyman, and a part-time worker armed with a smartphone. An Indiana Jones-style expedition to the centre of the Earth, to the roots of our nationhood… and perhaps even further. “The Anatomy of a National Revival” was written for the NdB Drama Company by Miloslav Vojtíšek (*1970), and in it he lives up to his reputation as an intellectual author with an unintentionally comedic, indeed Aristophanic, style.
