Three middle-aged men have a discussion on life

A conversational comedy about how a valuable painting can destroy a long-standing friendship. Serge (Boris in the Czech-language staging) has bought an expensive canvas as a token of his social status and a proof of his capacity to earn enough money that he can spend on artwork. His friends Yvan and Marc argue that buying that white abstract painting was pure foolishness; Marc even finds it intolerable. On an afternoon, the three friends shift from their quarrel over the sense of the ’empty’ canvas to the sense of their respective lives, evoking the troubles each of them encounters. Yasmina Reza (*1959), a French prose writer and dramatist, had achieved renown for her plays Art (1994) and God of Carnage (2006); both of them were later adapted to film by Roman Polanski. Reza’s gift to extract from a relatively simple situation an astonishing amount of material to portray complex human characters and the difficulties they face has made of her one of the most staged playwights of our time.  In the past, the Drammatic Company of the National Theater Brno produced Reza’s plays  God of Carnage and Three Versions of Life. Her most famous play Art will be directed by Štěpán Pácl.
