The Bartered Bride at the Špilberk Castle
Warm summer evenings are best spent under the stars with music, and that is why the Janáček Opera NdB ensemble is bringing opera performances to the romantic surroundings of Špilberk Castle again this year.
How to barter a bride? The best way is through the production of director Ondřej Havelka. One of the most popular Czech operas, Bedřich Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, has been in the repertoire of the Brno theatre for more than fifteen years and still has not lost any of its wit and audience popularity.
The plot takes us to a village where live Jeník and Mařenka, two young people who love each other. However, Mařenka is about to marry the son of a rich farmer, Mícha, to whom her father is in debt. But the young girl is not going to give up her love and refuses to marry the chosen bridegroom. It is Jeník who is clever and uses the matchmaker Kecal. But he and Mařenka don’t tell each other about their plans and the whole thing gets a bit messy… Ondřej Havelka has created a masterfully played musical theatre that is based on beautiful folk traditions, but at the same time he has found a distinctive view of the whole opera. It takes place not, as is usually the case, in summer during the harvest festival, but during the carnival, or as they say in Moravia, the Fašank! So you can look forward not only to the comedians in Act 3, but also to a number of real Moravian masquerades.
Staged in the Czech original with Czech, English and German subtitles. The performance lasts about 2 hours 50 minutes, including interval.
