William Shakespeare
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Love sometimes makes people act foolishly
On Midsummer Night, young lovers Hermia and Lysander flee Athens to escape the wrath of their disapproving parents. They are followed by Demetrius, who is hopelessly in love with Hermia, and Helena, who is desperately in love with Demetrius. And as if that weren’t enough, they get lost in the Athenian forest, which belongs to elves and fairies on this festive night.
The lovers are not alone in getting lost in the enchanted forest. A group of Athenian craftsmen and theatre enthusiasts are also making their way through the dense undergrowth, coming here to rehearse an amateur theatre performance. Both humans and supernatural inhabitants of the forest become entangled in a complex web of magic, and suddenly everything is turned upside down: those who once loved each other now cannot stand each other, and those who once hated each other now desire each other. Those who were once human can easily turn into animals, and in the marital bed of Titania, Queen of the Fairies, the powerful King Oberon is suddenly replaced by a donkey. Will King Oberon and his servant Puck manage to untangle this tangled web before dawn, or will the Athenians emerge from the forest as completely different people? If they emerge as people at all…
Shakespeare’s most famous comedy will fill the Mahen Theatre with the unique atmosphere of a magical summer night.
