Nikolaj Vasilievich Gogol
Marriage
Couldn’t we put the courting off until tomorrow?
Court councilor Ivan Kuzmich Podkolyosin would like to get married but in order to do so he must overcome an insurmountable obstacle which is less about defeating the other suitors of his intended, Miss Agafya, or about her potential shyness, than it is about Podkolyosin himself. Fortunately for him, his good friend Kochkaryov is ready to intervene with the matchmaker named Fyokla. Both are determined to conclude the marriage against the will of everybody! Ranking among the most remarkable comedies of its time, Marriage by Russian dramatist and writer Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809–1852) is not only put on again and again by drama companies, but also by opera ensembles (adaptation by composer Bohuslav Martinů). Gogol’s deeper insight into the depicted characters, and certain sympathy for them, lifts up the comedy to a higher level. This ‘typology of the Russian man’ was later taken further by Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy and Chekhov. Gogol, just like them, had put his finger on ‘universally human features’ because we are still surrounded by Podkolyosins, Kochkaryovs, Fyoklas, Anuchkins and Zhevakins, even though we are neither in a Russian village, nor in the 19th century. Directed by Štěpán Pácl, Gogol‘s Marriage returns to the Mahen Theater after thirty years.
